BLESSING OF WINE IS THIS THURSDAY

On December 27th, in the Roman Ritual there is the blessing of St John wine. Have your priest Bless wine on this day.  You use this wine to drink a toast  to St John on this day before dinner.  Here is how it it done:

When it is drunk on his Feast Day, we drink it before dinner as a toast to St. John. The Father of the house lifts his glass toward Mother and says, "I drink you the love of St. John." The Mother replies "I thank you for the Love of St. John" and then turns to the oldest child, lifts her glass, and says, "I drink you the love of St. John..." -- and on it goes down the line until each has been toasted.

Here is the blessing of the wine and how it is done:
BLESSING OF WINEon the Feast of St. John, Apostle and Evangelist (December 27)
At the end of the principal Mass on the feast of St. John, Apostle and Evangelist, after the last Gospel, the priest, retaining all vestments except the maniple, blesses wine brought by the people. This is done in memory and in honor of St. John, who drank without any ill effects the poisoned wine offered to him by his enemies.
P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
All: Who made heaven and earth.
P: The Lord be with you.
All: May He also be with you.
Let us pray.
If it please you, Lord God, bless + and consecrate + this vessel of wine (or any other beverage) by the power of your right hand; and grant that, through the merits of St. John, apostle and evangelist, all your faithful who drink of it may find it a help and a protection. As the blessed John drank the poisoned potion without any ill effects, so may all who today drink the blessed
wine in his honor be delivered from poisoning and similar harmful things. And as they offer themselves body and soul to you, may they obtain pardon of all their sins; through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
Lord, bless + this creature drink, so that it may be a health-giving medicine to all who use it; and grant by your grace that all who taste of it may enjoy bodily and spiritual health in calling on your holy name; through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
May the blessing of almighty God, Father, Son, + and Holy Spirit, come on this wine (or any other beverage) and remain always.
All: Amen.
It is sprinkled with holy water. If the blessing is given privately outside of Mass, the priest is vested in surplice and stole and performs the ceremony as given above.

LATIN MASS GROWS IN SAVANNAH DIOCESE

GREAT NEWS!

THE LATIN MASS SOCIETY OF THE GOLDEN ISLES IS PROUD TO SAY THAT THE FIRST LATIN MASSES IN BRUNSWICK GA IN 50 YEARS WAS A FANTASTIC SUCCESS. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE WERE ESPECIALLY SURPRISED HOW MANY PEOPLE SHOWED UP TO THE SATURDAY MORNING LOW MASS, WHICH WAS PRETTY MUCH AN UNADVERTISED MASS, WITH 29 PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE. AT THE SUNDAY HIGH MASS FATHER CELEBRANT, SAID HE DISTRIBUTED 100 SACRED HOST, NOT TO MENTION THE PEOPLE WHO DID NOT RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION. I WAS VERY HAPPY TO HEAR MANY PEOPLE SING SOME OF THE RESPONSES AT THE HIGH MASS, SUCH AS " ET CUM SPIRITU TUA", "AMEN", " LIBERA NOS A MALO", ETC. AFTER MASS SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT HE ACTUALLY SAW PEOPLE CRYING IN THE BACK OF THE CHURCH OUT OF LOVE FOR THIS MASS WHICH THEY HAD NOT SEEN IN FIFTY YEARS. DURING THE COFFEE AND DONUTS AFTER MASS, PEOPLE WERE SHOWING ME THEIR TRADITIONAL MISSALS THAT THEY WERE GIVEN BEFORE THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL OF OUR ALTAR SERVERS, INCLUDING MY FATHER WHO SERVED  FOR THE FIRST TIME  AT THE HIGH MASS. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK OUR ONE CHOIR MEMBER FROM JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA, BECAUSE WITHOUT HIS EXCELLENT SINGING WE COULD NOT OF HAD A HIGH MASS. I ALSO THANK ALL OF THE PEOPLE AT THE LATIN MASS COMMUNITY IN SAVANNAH GA WHO HELPED US IN NUMEROUS WAYS.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK FATHER MATHEW MCCARTHY FOR DRIVING FROM   TO THE GA COAST TO SAY THESE HOLY MASSES. Historic Traditional Mission Trip Completed-UPDATED

UPDATE: CLICK HERE TO SEE PHOTOS OF THIS WONDERFUL MISSION TRIP

http://s1053.photobucket.com/albums/s466/DanielHeenan/Saint%20Francis%20Xavier%20Mission%20Trip/Mission%20Highlights/

For those that supported the first ever traditional foreign mission trip (see our earlier post) it has been completed and was a tremendous success. The mission group was sponsored by the FSSP and visited the country of the Dominican Republic. Here is the report on this historic event.

By Mr. Daniel Heenan (FSSP seminarian):
From June 18-28th the Saint Francis Xavier Mission Trip of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter journeyed to the remote town of Banica in the Dominican Republic for a ten-day mission trip. Banica is situated along the Haitian border, about a five-hour drive from the capital, Santo Domingo. Many people in this region live in abject poverty. Though the parish was established in the early 16th century by Spanish missionaries, for most of its history it has not had a resident priest. Approximately 20 years ago, the diocese of Arlington, VA began sending priests to care for the Catholic population of about 8,000 souls in the parish of San Francisco in Banica and in the neighboring parish of San Jose. The majority of the parish is scattered among numerous, impoverished rural villages and can only be visited periodically by the priest.

Like other groups that make similar trips, the Saint Francis Xavier Mission Trip sought to serve Christ in the poor, and, through this encounter, sanctify those who participated in the trip. To this end, the group built two outhouses in the small town of Cercadillo, which is situated about 15 miles outside of Banica but takes close to an hour to reach by truck due to the poor condition of the roads. This simple amenity represents a tremendous asset to these people who have no running water and no electricity. The young people also built a simple fence around the village’s cemetery to add to its dignity and to keep out the animals.

The goals of this trip, however, were not limited to the corporal works of mercy. Along with dirtying their hands with difficult manual labor under the intense summer sun, the FSSP also provided training in the Traditional Latin Mass to the pastor of the mission, Fr. Keith O’Hare, of the diocese of Arlington, VA. Seminarians likewise provided training in serving the Traditional Mass to the altar boys of the parish. During the group’s stay, three sung Masses and one Solemn High Mass were offered in Banica (certainly the first Solemn Mass in a long time and perhaps even the first ever considering the scarcity of clergy in the region) and a second Solemn High Mass was offered at the end of the trip in the church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in the historic colonial zone of Santo Domingo. Fr. Lillard offered the votive Mass of Nuestra Senora de Altagracia, patroness of the Dominican Republic and was assisted by Fr. O’Hare as the deacon of the Mass.

Just as the evidence of the impact of the work in the village of Cercadillo could be seen in the new structures that were built and the friendships made with the local residents, so too were the spiritual results evident as curious residents found their way to the back of the church during the group’s Masses and holy hours and followed the group’s example in receiving at the altar rail, going to confession, and even wearing chapel veils, as the altar boys gained a new appreciation for the richness of the church’s tradition, and as Fr. O’Hare began making plans to regularly celebrate the extraordinary form.
A trip such as this certainly leaves participants with a renewed fervor for their faith, wonderful new friendships, and a countless store of anecdotes. One such story that beautifully encapsulates the blending of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy occurred during the final day working in Cercadillo. While digging post holes for the cemetery fence, a man came up and asked to speak to a priest. A man on the other side of the village, he related, was dying and wanted help from the Church. What he was requesting at first, however, was help finishing the latrine that the dying man had begun. He saw that the group of Americans had been building outhouses for other villagers and, since the man had taken ill and was unable to finish the one he had begun, his family was hoping they could receive similar assistance. Hearing that the man was dying, the priest was alerted and he and one of the seminarians immediately went to see him. This man who had sought material help was about to receive something much greater, for this man had been away from the Church for years and on account of that had not even thought it possible to request the sacraments. The dying man’s daughter, who had just arrived from the capital the previous day, greeted the Americans with tears in her eyes. She explained how she had prayed and wept through the night beseeching God to look after her father who had been away from the sacraments for some time. She extolled the mercy of God for the fact that that very day a priest had ridden into this remote village – something that is not an ordinary occurrence. When the visit was concluded, the two clerics returned to the rest of the group to find the fence nearly completed. Father was then able to consecrate the cemetery, hallowing the ground in which the body of that newly sanctified man would perhaps soon be interred.

BLESSING OF A BONFIRE OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST

One of the most ancient blessings in the Roman Ritual is the Blessing of a bonfire on the Vigil of the Nativity of St John the Baptist. ( The Vigil is June 23rd this year). Pursuant to Summorum Pontificum you can ask your priest to utilize the Roman Ritual (in addition to the Missal &Breviary) and can ask him to perfom this blessing at your Church

If you are able to have your priest bless a bonfire here is the english translation of the Blessing for you to follow along:

 BLESSING OF A BONFIRE

on the Vigil of the Birthday of St. John the Baptist

conferred by the clergy outside of church

In the Church's veneration of her saints the cult of John the Baptist had from earliest times and continues to have a most prominent and honored place. John gave testimony of the true light that shines in the darkness, although he proclaimed in utter humility: "He must increase, but I must decrease." And the Master also spoke in highest praise of His precursor: "I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist." Attuned to the words of the Gospel the Christians of former times were filled with love and enthusiasm for this saint, and expressed a justifiable conviviality at the approach of his feastday by lighting a bonfire the night before in front of their churches, in the market-place, on the hilltops, and in the valleys. The custom of St. John bonfires, indicative of a people with unabashed and childlike faith, continues in some places to this day.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

All: Who made heaven and earth.

P: The Lord be with you.

All: May He also be with you.
Let us pray.

Lord God, almighty Father, the light that never fails and the source of all light, sanctify + this new fire, and grant that after the darkness of this life we may come unsullied to you who are light eternal; through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

The fire is sprinkled with holy water; after which the clergy and the people sing the following hymn (for the music see the music supplement):

Hymn: Ut queant laxis

O for your spirit, holy John, to chasten

Lips sin-polluted, fettered tongues to loosen;

So by your children might your deeds of wonder

Meetly be chanted.

Lo! a swift herald, from the skies descending,

Bears to your father promise of your greatness;

How he shall name you, what your future story,

Duly revealing.

Scarcely believing message so transcendent,

Him for a season power of speech forsaketh,

Till, at your wondrous birth, again returneth,

Voice to the voiceless.

You, in your mother's womb all darkly cradled,

Knew your great Monarch, biding in His chamber,

Whence the two parents, through their offspring's merits,

Mysteries uttered.

Praise to the Father, to the Son begotten,

And to the Spirit, equal power possessing,

One God whose glory, through the lapse of ages,

Ever resounding.

P: There was a man sent from God.

All Whose name was John.
Let us pray.

God, who by reason of the birth of blessed John have made this

day praiseworthy, give your people the grace of spiritual joy,

and keep the hearts of your faithful fixed on the way that leads

to everlasting salvation; through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

The Faithful are in a cirlce around the fire and after the blessing walk 15 times counterclockwise while praying the Ave Maria. Old sacramentals that need to be disposed of are place in the fire.

SSPX REQUESTS PRAYERS

The SSPX has one chapel in Georgia. The SSPX has asked for prayers. The Holy Father will decide their fate this month. Please join in and ask for the Holy Ghost to guide those involved. Here is the SSPX request:

May 2012

Dear Friends and Benefactors,

A lot of rumors are being spread regarding the relations between the Roman authorities and the Society of St. Pius X. On this regard, I wish to simply remind the communiqué from the General House of the Society of April 18, 2012:

In a letter dated April 17, 2012, the Superior General of the Society of St. Pius X responded to the request for clarification that had been made to him on March 16 by Cardinal William Levada concerning the Doctrinal Preamble delivered on September 14, 2011. As the press release dated today from the Ecclesia Dei Commission indicates, the text of this response “will be examined by the dicastery (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) then submitted to the Holy Father for his judgment".

The matter is in the hands of the Holy Father and we are waiting for His decision.

Let us remember that it is to our Superior General, and only to him, that has been entrusted by the law of the Church and the will of Archbishop Lefebvre the delicate task of our relations with Rome. As such, he is the only competent authority to take prudent decisions for our Society. Because of his function and his 18 years of leadership in keeping the Faith and seeking the common good of the Church, we renew to him all our confidence, trust and respectful obedience in this difficult time. Our filial piety to him, as to the Sovereign Pontiff, pushes us to do more than usual in these unusual circumstances: we desire to bring to them the support of all your prayers.

To pray is indeed the most important, and as a matter of fact, the only thing we can do now. I would like to ask you to double your efforts in the Rosary Crusade, which will end on Pentecost Sunday (May 27, 2012), keeping in mind the striking results of the previous ones. I wish also to solicit your generosity in offering a novena to the Holy Ghost.

The intention of this novena will be that the Holy Ghost may give the graces of light and strength to the Holy Father, Benedict XVI, and to the Superior General of the Society, Bishop Fellay.

The novena consists of praying the Veni Creator Spiritus and adding the Memorare (Remember, O Most Gracious Virgin Mary) starting on May 8 and ending on May 16, the vigil of the feast of the Ascension of Our Lord.

I authorize the priests to add these prayers just before or after their daily Mass.

Let us pray that the Good Lord may keep us all united in the Faith and in a corps spirit around our Superior, working for the Restoration of all things in Christ as ever.

In the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Fr. Arnaud Rostand

SSPX Has Replied to the Reconcilliation Proposal by Rome UPDATED

UPDATE:
The rumors are rampant that an agreement has been reached, but nothing official as yet. There are forces on both sides that do not want to see an agreement, to read the latest click here:
http://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/

This Sunday (Dominica in Albis) is the deadline for the SSPX to respond to Rome about their reconcilliation. Appreantly the reply of the SSPX has been sent to the Vatican, and now we wait. The SSPX said they would say nothing and leave it up to Rome to make a public statement about what the reply says. They have said nothing whether they accept the reconcilliation or not. Please pray for the reconcilliation of the SSPX. The National Catholic Register thinks they will reconcile and that it will cause a worldwide tummult in the novus ordo world. The SSPX has one chapel in Georgia located in Roswell ( Atlanta Diocese) Click here for the details.

Developments in the Savannah Diocese

Two news items are of interest to traditional Catholics in the Savannah Diocese.

First: There has been a formal request for the Latin Mass in the Augusta area, and
Second: The Bishop has been petitioned for the establishment of a traditional personal parish for the Diocese. Please contact the Bishop by phone or letter to show support for these two initiatives. The more support these initiatives receive the more likely they may come to fruition. A personal parish is a Diocese wide parish. All traditional Catholics in the Diocese can join the parish and all liturgies, sacraments, devotions, and parish life would be in the Extra Ordianry Form of the Roman Rite. Ususually this involves the parish being staffed by priests from a traditional order. The Archdiocese of Atlanta has a traditional personal parish staffed by the FSSP.

Traditional Catholics Active in Macon

MIDDLE GEORGIA LATIN MASS COMMUNITY MEETS IN MACON
This Sunday, February 12, 2012 (Sexagessima Sunday) at 2 p.m. there will be a Low Mass at St. Joseph Church in Macon, Georgia. This will be the kick-off event for the new St. Joseph Young Adult Ministry, but everyone is invited to the Mass. The Latin Mass Community will meet briefly following the February 12th Low Mass to discuss the formation of a Lenten Faith Group. That group is tentatively scheduled to meet around 6 p.m. on Sundays during Lent to discuss Fulton Sheen's book The Last Seven Words.

The Macon Latin Mass Community met for the first time following yesterday's High Mass at St. Joseph Church. After the Mass, Fr. McDonald led us in the Te Deum and then gave a talk about the Dialogue Mass - his hope is that the congregation will take a more active role along with the altar servers in saying the responses during Mass.

SOLEMN MASS IN MACON ON MARCH 19TH 2012
As an aside from the news: on March 19, we have a Solemn High Mass for the Solemnity of St. Joseph. The Latin Mass Community would really like to use this as a teaching event in hopes of getting more people to regularly come to the Mass. Fr. McDonald yesterday mentioned the idea of doing some catechesis on the TLM during the homily.
Lots of good things going on in Macon with the restoration of Tradition!

SSPX News-UPDATED

UPDATED INFO

Here is the latest on the SSPX situation:

Antoine Marie Izoard, I.MEDIA Agency

Rome, February 20, (Apic). The matter of a return to full communion with the Catholic Church of the Society of Saint Pius X (FSSPX [SSPX]) is "in the Pope's hands", sources close to the dossier revealed to I.Media on February 20, 2012. Now that the phase of discussions with the Lefebvrists is over, Benedict XVI should shortly pronounce a final judgment to put an end, "before summer", to the discussions held since 2009 with the Society separated from Rome.

After having studied the response of the Society of Saint Pius X to the "doctrinal preamble", that had been handed to them at mid-September 2011, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith now awaits the decision of Benedict XVI. "The stage of study and discussion is over, and we have reached the moment for decisions," it is indicated in the Vatican, underlining that, "all is currently in the hands of the Pope, who should deliver a final opinion."

The SSPX has one parish (St Michael's)in Roswell Georgia, we pray that they will be reconciled with Rome soon, it appears that the issue is now in the hands of the Holy Father.

Pope Benedict XVI at the failure of negotiations with the fundamentalist
Jean Mercier
28/01/2012

After a final review of the record fundamentalist by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Benedict XVI is to decide now if the dissidents Lefebvrists can be reintegrated into the Catholic Church. The pope, who has worked hard for a reconciliation, faces the fundamentalist rejection of the legacy of Vatican II.

Never the solitude of the head of the Catholic Church has been greater. Pope must decide the issue of reconciliation between the Catholic Church and dissidents Lefebvrists. The Pope must rule after the balance achieved by the Plenary Assembly of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), met from January 24 to 27, who worked on this issue among other topics.

At this asemblée, the prelates of the CDF members scrutinized the answers that the Priestly Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) has given the Preamble doctrine that had been submitted in September 2011. First, the initial response of Bishop Fellay, head of the SSPX, sent to the Vatican in December 2011 and which led to a request for clarification. Then, the second response sent by Bishop Fellay in mid-January 2012. However, sources relayed by the agency I. MEDIA, the second response did not satisfy members of the CDF. Indeed, the FFSPX involves much of the legacy of Vatican II. Officially, according to Monsignor Guido Pozzo, secretary of the Commission Ecclesia Dei, joined by La Vie , the evaluation phase of the response Lefebvrist is completed. The outcome rests in the hands of Benedict XVI. But it is unlikely that the Pope is pronounced differently from the bishops of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

CHANGES TO THE MISSAL ???

  1. BELOW IS A STATEMENT BY OUR INTERNATIONAL OFFICE ABOUT THE POSSIBLE CHANGES THAT MAY BE MADE TO THE TRADITIONAL MASS
The Revision of the Missal of 1962.

The Concerns of the International Federation Una Voce,
Preamble:

It is known that work has commenced in Rome on the revision of the Missal of 1962. As has been the norm in recent years, these matters are being conducted discreetly and only made public when the relevant document is promulgated, viz: Summorum Pontificum and Universae Ecclesiae. The very narrow remit given by the Holy Father to the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei in his Letter to Accompany Summorum Pontificum [7 July, 2007] was that: “..new Saints and some of the new Prefaces can and should be inserted in the old Missal.”  No other changes were sanctioned. Pope Benedict also stated that “The Ecclesia Dei Commission, in contact with various bodies devoted to the usus antiquior, will study the possibilities in this regard.”
Those who are “devoted to the usus antiquior” must continually and carefully ensure that this specific and narrow remit is not exceeded by those in Rome and elsewhere who desire to undermine the integrity of the Missal of 1962 by demanding the inclusion of some of the novelties which were introduced into the liturgy post-1962.  The International Federation Una Voce was founded in early 1965, even before the Second Vatican Council had ended, and is by far the oldest organisation, lay or clerical, which is devoted to the usus antiquior. While other organisations and societies, clerical and lay, may also be devoted to the ‘usus antiquior’, none can match the 46 year history of the Una Voce Federation in its unswerving devotion to this cause. The Federation has played a unique role in being the first, and the continuous voice of the lay faithful in seeking adherence to the expressed wishes of the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council as declared in Sacrosanctum Concilium n.4:

“Finally, in faithful obedience to tradition, the Sacred Council declares that Holy Mother Church holds all lawfully recognised rites to be of equal right and dignity; that she wishes to preserve them in the future and to foster them in every way.”

The members of the Foederatio Internationalis Una Voce motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, confirmed what the International Federation has always claimed, that the Missal of 1962 ‘was never juridically abrogated’. The Holy Father also confirmed in his letter that his decision was to bring about “an interior reconciliation in the heart of the church.”

Liturgical innovation and creativity is unwanted by the faithful and has consistently disturbed, angered and alienated them in the years following the Second Vatican Council. This must not happen again with the adulteration of the Missal of 1962. The International Federation accepts organic development but emphatically rejects liturgical innovation which is alien to the character, spirit, and integrity of the usus antiquior.  The inestimable treasure of the ancient liturgy must not be undermined by novelty, reductionism, and destructive modernisation. Nothing describes the attraction of the usus antiquior more powerfully than the growing number of young Catholics world-wide, including many seminarians and young priests, who are discovering this ancient and deeply spiritual liturgy and are being captivated by it.

We are now entering a critical period in the life of the liturgy of Holy Mother Church. Decisions that are being taken in Rome today will have a lasting impact on the spiritual welfare of the faithful for generations. The need to implement the will of the Holy Father for a limited and organic change in harmony with the character of the Missal of 1962 must not be the excuse for the introduction into the traditional Roman liturgy of alien concepts that created so much disunity and disharmony in the years immediately following the Second Vatican Council.

Following the publication of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, the President of the Foederatio Internationalis Una Voce presented a document to the Ecclesia Dei Commission in June 2008. Now that work on amending the Missal of 1962 has commenced, it may be timely to republish this document, in an updated form, to make clear, once again, the desires and aspirations of the members of the Una Voce Federation.

Addendum:

The long-awaited clarification document, Universae Ecclesiae, was published by the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei on 30th April 2011 and was subject to much comment and detailed analysis in the media. The International Federation Una Voce welcomed the document.

Although some have commented that Universae Ecclesiae still leaves some questions unclear, what is perfectly clear is that the Holy Father has fully restored to the universal Church the traditional Roman rite as enshrined in the liturgical books of 1962, that the rubrics in force in 1962 must be strictly observed, and that Latin and the Usus Antiquior must be taught in seminaries where there is a pastoral need. And this pastoral need must be determined by those who wish to benefit from Summorum Pontificum and Universae Ecclesiae, and not be decided by those many in authority whose natural desire is to prevent their implementation.

The International Federation Una Voce has worked patiently and tirelessly for the restoration of the traditional liturgy for more than 45 years and is now witnessing a vindication of its fidelity to Holy Mother Church and the See of Peter. However, its members, the lay faithful of Holy Mother Church, are fully aware that many in the ranks of the clergy have a burning desire to thwart their legitimate aspirations to benefit spiritually from the pastoral solicitude of Pope Benedict XVI.  To this end, we who are beneficiaries of these documents, wish to state unequivocally that, while accepting the stated will of our Holy Father for the inclusion of new Saints and some new Prefaces into the Missal of 1962, we will respectfully and vigorously challenge any proposal that strays beyond these clearly defined limits and seeks to adulterate the integrity of that Missal.

Leo Darroch,
President – Foederatio Internationalis Una Voce.
30th January 2012.
