INDULGENCE OF ALL SOULS DAY AND OCTAVE

Between Noon of ( All Saints Day) November 1 and Midnight of All Souls day ( Nov 2nd) , a person who has been to confession and Communion can gain a plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, for the poor souls each time he visits a church or public oratory and recites the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory be to the Father six times. This is a special exception to the ordinary law of the Church according to which a plenary indulgence for the same work can be gained only once a day.

Also, the faithful who, during the period of eight days from All Saints Day, visit a cemetery and pray for the dead may gain a plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, on each day of the Octave, applicable only to the dead. Here is a simple invocation for the dead, called the "Eternal Rest" prayer:

English translation:
Eternal rest grant unto him/her (them), O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon him/her (them). May he/she (they) rest in peace. Amen.

Latin:
Réquiem ætérnam dona ei (eis) Dómine; et lux perpétua lúceat ei (eis). Requiéscat (Requiéscant) in pace. Amen.

Catholics also pray this prayer for the dead anytime throughout the year, and whenever they pass a cemetery. Many families pray a Rosary nightly for the dead throughout the Octave of All Souls, replacing the Fatima prayer with the Eternal Rest prayer

TRADITIONAL CONFESSION

We (Una Voce Atlanta) published the below article originally while Summorum Pontificum was in force to assist new Latin Mass locations in our state with how different Traditional Confessions are in comparison with  novus ordo confessions. Due to the recent explosion of interest in traditional confessions in our Archdiocese, the article is reposted below for our new members of Una Voce Atlanta. This article is the most popular of all articles Una Voce has on this web site.

 CONSIDERATIONS ON TRADITIONAL CONFESSION

The penitent enters the confessional and says, “Bless me Father, for I have sinned.” The penitent makes the Sign of the Cross while the priest says, “The Lord be in Thy heart and on thy lips, that thou mayest rightly confess thy sins. In the name of the Father †, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.” The penitent tells the priest his state in life and how long it has been since his last Confession, then recites the number and kind of his sins. The penitent concludes with a statement to the effect of, “For these and all my other sins, which I cannot presently remember, I am heartily sorry.” (Or similar words) The priest may ask some questions and give some advice. The priest will assign a penance.

The priest then says: “Misereátur tui omnípotens Deus, et dimíssis peccátis tuis, perdúcat te ad vitam ætérnam. Amen.” (In English: “May almighty God have mercy on thee, and forgive thee all thy sins, and bring thee to life everlasting. Amen.”) Holding his right hand over the penitent, the priest says: “Indulgéntiam, absolutiónem, et remissiónem peccatórum tuórum tríbuat tibi omnípotens et miséricors Dóminus. Amen.” (In English: “May the Almighty and merciful God grant thee indulgence, absolution, and remission of all thy sins. Amen.”) Still holding his right hand over the penitent, the priest removes any impediments to the validity of the absolution he is about to give: “Dóminus noster Jesus Christus te absólvat; et ego auctoritáte ipsíus te absólvo ab omni vínculo excommunicatiónis, (suspensiónis,) et interdícti, in quantum possum et tu índiges.” If the penitent is a layman, the word “suspensiónis” is omitted. (The English translation: “May our Lord Jesus Christ absolve thee; and by His authority I absolve thee from every bond of excommunication, (suspension,) and interdict, in proportion to my power and thy need.) The priest recites the words of absolution while both the priest and the penitent make the Sign of the Cross. (In English: “Thereupon, I absolve thee from thy sins, in the name of the Father †, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.”) Finally, the priest says a prayer for the remission of temporal punishment due for sins: “Passio Dómini nostri Jesu Christi, mérita Beátæ Maríæ Vírginis, et ómnium Sanctórum, quidquid boni féceris, et mali sustinúeris, sint tibi in remissiónem peccatórum, augméntum grátiæ et præmium vitæ ætérnæ. Amen.” (In English: “May the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, the merits of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of all the saints, whatever good you shall have done, and evil you shall have endured, be to you unto remission of sins, increase of grace, and reward of eternal life. Amen.”)

Note that the traditional Form of the Sacrament does not require the penitent to make an Act of Contrition. The priest does retain the option to request this, a sensible and laudable custom, prior to giving absolution. It seems that most of the priests using the older rite of confession are indeed asking penitents to say the act of contrition, so you will most likely be asked to say it. Usually while you are saying the act of contrition the priest will give absolution at the same time so he will be talking in Latin while you are saying the act of contrition.

When confession is over the priest will say " Go in peace your sins are forgiven" You thank the priest and leave. Also note that canonically, a priest does not have the right to remove every kind of bond of excommunication. That is reserved to the diocesan Ordinary (bishop). Therefore, the prayer is careful to say, “in proportion to my power”. A priest must refrain from absolving difficult cases and refer the matter to a bishop. Please note that in the Atlanta Archdiocese (and probably Savannah as well) the bishop has granted priests the power to absolve from the excommunication of abortion.)

The concluding prayer for remission of temporal punishment is a beautiful and appropriate follow-up to absolution and is unique to the Extraordinary Form. Once you leave the confessional you will kneel in church and perform your penance. Remember to also try and obtain indulgences to wash away the temporal punishment due to sins. One thing that often occurs where the Latin mass is started is that people return to the Church after 20-30 years of absence, so it is very important to get these people to confession. If they mention that they don't remember how to go to confession, simply tell them to go in the confessional and say, " Father I haven't been to confession in 20 years and I don't remember what to do" The priest will talk them through it. Also let them know that priests are highly honored when they can hear a confession and bring a person back into the Church after such a long time.

One of the most ancient blessings in the Roman Ritual is the Blessing of a bonfire on the Vigil of the Nativity of St John the Baptist. (The Vigil is June 23rd). You can ask your priest to utilize the Roman Ritual and can ask him to perform this blessing at your Church

If you are able to have your priest bless a bonfire here is the English translation of the Blessing for you to follow along:

 BLESSING OF A BONFIRE

on the Vigil of the Birthday of St. John the Baptist

conferred by the clergy outside of church

In the Church's veneration of her saints the cult of John the Baptist had from earliest times and continues to have a most prominent and honored place. John gave testimony of the true light that shines in the darkness, although he proclaimed in utter humility: "He must increase, but I must decrease." And the Master also spoke in highest praise of His precursor: "I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist." Attuned to the words of the Gospel the Christians of former times were filled with love and enthusiasm for this saint, and expressed a justifiable conviviality at the approach of his feast day by lighting a bonfire the night before in front of their churches, in the market-place, on the hilltops, and in the valleys. The custom of St. John bonfires, indicative of a people with unabashed and childlike faith, continues in some places to this day.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

All: Who made heaven and earth.

P: The Lord be with you.

All: May He also be with you.
Let us pray.

Lord God, almighty Father, the light that never fails and the source of all light, sanctify + this new fire, and grant that after the darkness of this life we may come unsullied to you who are light eternal; through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

The fire is sprinkled with holy water; after which the clergy and the people sing the following hymn (for the music see the music supplement):

Hymn: Ut queant laxis

O for your spirit, holy John, to chasten

Lips sin-polluted, fettered tongues to loosen;

So by your children might your deeds of wonder

Meetly be chanted.

Lo! a swift herald, from the skies descending,

Bears to your father promise of your greatness;

How he shall name you, what your future story,

Duly revealing.

Scarcely believing message so transcendent,

Him for a season power of speech forsaketh,

Till, at your wondrous birth, again returneth,

Voice to the voiceless.

You, in your mother's womb all darkly cradled,

Knew your great Monarch, biding in His chamber,

Whence the two parents, through their offspring's merits,

Mysteries uttered.

Praise to the Father, to the Son begotten,

And to the Spirit, equal power possessing,

One God whose glory, through the lapse of ages,

Ever resounding.

P: There was a man sent from God.

All Whose name was John.
Let us pray.

God, who by reason of the birth of blessed John have made this

day praiseworthy, give your people the grace of spiritual joy,

and keep the hearts of your faithful fixed on the way that leads

to everlasting salvation; through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

ATLANTA ARCHBISHOP APPROVES NEW CHURCH PROJECT

GREAT NEWS!!!!!!! H.E. ARCHBISHOP JOHN HARTMAYER APPROVES FSSP REQUEST FOR NEW CHURCH BUILDING PROJECT

Due to the tremendous growth that has occurred at Saint Francis de Sales in Mableton, the FSSP parish has outgrown its church and facilities. Sunday masses are no longer in the church and have been moved to a gymnasium to accommodate the large crowds. Because of this, the pastor made a request of the archbishop to approve the parish to build a new larger church. The archbishop responded positively to the request. He is a friend of the FSSP and supports the FSSP parish.

Below is the announcement by the pastor as to exactly what permission has been granted by the archbishop.

Archbishop Hartmayer has given us the green light to begin the preparations necessary to consider the possibility of building a new church. There is much work to be done and many questions to be answered, so please keep this intention in your daily prayers. The average building project takes around 4 years to complete. Archbishop kindly sends his blessing on our parish and parishioners.

UNA VOCE SOUTH GEORGIA NEWS
FOR ALL CATHOLICS IN THE EASTERN PART OF OUR STATE PLEASE CONSIDER ATTENDING THIS EVENT, HELP SPREAD THE WORD, BELOW IS THE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM UNA VOCE SOUTH GEORGIA

Another great event will be happening within driving distance that we want to inform you about. Fr. Chad Ripperger, well known exorcist and public speaker will be coming to Columbia to give a talk and answer questions early next month. If you are not familiar with his talks, just google his name and you will find plenty on YouTube and elsewhere. He is not a sensationalist with wild exorcism stories that put your hair on end, but rather very even-keeled and measured in his talks and Q & A sessions covering all sorts of topics related to the faith and the spiritual realm. Listening to him is always well worth the time spent.

Fr. Ripperger will be at Our Lady of the Lake in Chapin, SC the evening of Thursday, March 9th. There will be a reception starting around 5:30pm and his family talk will likely begin somewhere around 6:30. If you can make it, please do! There is no fee for admission, though I'm sure our traditional Catholic counterparts in Columbia who are organizing this event would appreciate donations if you were willing to help them defray the cost of bringing Father in. Also, if you are not subscribed to their emails, reach out to tlm4columbia@gmail.com to keep apprised of their events. They have a wonderful traditional community with a weekly Latin Mass, frequent processions on major feasts, and guest speaker events like this one, and they are only a little over an hour up the road from Augusta. Augusta Latin Mass is committed to building a stronger relationship with them in the coming months and years. If you can make it to this talk to listen to Fr. Ripperger and maybe meet some of the wonderful folks in Columbia, please do!

ATLANTA ARCHDIOCESE ISSUES NEW DECREE EFFECTIVE EASTER SUNDAY

NEW LEGISLATION FOR LATIN MASS EFFECTIVE EASTER 2023 FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE OF ATLANTA

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE NEW LEGISLATION DOES NOT AFFECT THE FSSP PARISH OF ST FRANCIS DE SALES IN MABLETON-THIS AFFECTS EVERYONE ELSE EXCEPT THE FSSP, IT IS BUSINESS AS USUAL AT ST FRANCIS DE SALES. (Below is verbatim from the bishop)

Traditional Latin Mass and Novus Ordo New legislation in the Archdiocese of Atlanta

In the past months, some of you have sent questions regarding the Latin Mass and Novus Ordo masses “ad orientem”. The Motu Propio Traditionis Custodes deals with the Missale Romanum of 1962 only, it does not deal with the entire liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council. The Reform of the Second Vatican Council permits priests 1 Can. 534 §1. After a pastor has taken possession of his parish, he is obliged to apply a Mass for the people entrusted to him on each Sunday and holy day of obligation in his diocese. If he is legitimately impeded from this celebration, however, he is to apply it on the same days through another or on other days himself. §2. A pastor who has the care of several parishes is bound to apply only one Mass for the entire people entrusted to him on the days mentioned in §1. §3. A pastor who has not satisfied the obligation mentioned in §§1 and 2 is to apply as soon as possible as many Masses for the people as he has omitted. 2 Ibid §2 3 Ibid §1 4 Ibid §3 to celebrate the Novus Ordo ad orientem in Latin and in the vernacular. However, it leaves to the Diocesan bishop if he allows his priests to celebrate pubicly in those forms as they see fitting in their ministry to the people of God or “ad casum”, meaning only with the explicit request of the priest and the explicit permission from the Diocesan bishop, in this case the Archbishop. If approved, the Archbishop must seek the permission of the Vatican for each request. Historically, the request have been denied. Now, the sacraments and sacramentals in accord with the Missale Romanum of 1962 are celebrated at Saint Francis de Sales parish in Mableton, GA., where the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter serves so diligently. At Saint Monica parish in Duluth, GA., only the sacrament of the Eucharist in celebrated in accord with the Missale Romanum of 1962 on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation at 8:15 AM. All the other sacraments and sacramentals are in the vernacular. After consultation with the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, starting on the Solemnity of the Resurrection of the Lord, (April 9, 2023) all the priests and bishops assigned or residing in the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Atlanta that want to celebrate publicly: 1. The Extraordinary Form of the Mass (except: Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Monica) 2. Novus Ordo ad orientem in Latin 3. Novus Ordo ad orientem in the vernacular 4. Novus Ordo versus populum in Latin 5. All sacraments and sacramentals in the form previous to the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council must request, by formal letter, permission from the Archbishop. The letter should include the rationale for such celebration. I urge you to read or re-read the Apostolic Letter Desiderio Desideravi, on the liturgical formation of the people of God, and personally get involved in the decision-making that guarantees the decorum, order and nobility of your liturgical celebrations at your parishes and places of worship.
