Blessing of St John's Fire

ALL CATHOLIC MEN INVITED TO ST JOHNS FIRE

The parish of St Francis de Sales in Mableton (Atlanta Archdiocese) will have the annual Blessing of the bonfire for the Vigil of the Feast of The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist at 7:00 pm Saturday June 27th and invites all Catholic men to come (please note this is a MALE ONLY event-if you are a father, you can bring your teenage son). The festivities are sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Bring a lawn chair, we will cookout, smoke cigars, and burn old sacramentals, sing and pray. Please bring a side dish to share. A FSSP priest will be in attendance for conversation. Immerse yourself in Catholic culture.

One of the most ancient blessings in the Roman Ritual is the Blessing of a bonfire on the Vigil of the Nativity of St John the Baptist. (The Vigil is June 23rd). You can ask your priest to utilize the Roman Ritual and can ask him to perform this blessing at your Church

If you are able to have your priest bless a bonfire here is the English translation of the Blessing for you to follow along:

 BLESSING OF A BONFIRE

on the Vigil of the Birthday of St. John the Baptist

conferred by the clergy outside of church

In the Church's veneration of her saints the cult of John the Baptist had from earliest times and continues to have a most prominent and honored place. John gave testimony of the true light that shines in the darkness, although he proclaimed in utter humility: "He must increase, but I must decrease." And the Master also spoke in highest praise of His precursor: "I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist." Attuned to the words of the Gospel the Christians of former times were filled with love and enthusiasm for this saint, and expressed a justifiable conviviality at the approach of his feast day by lighting a bonfire the night before in front of their churches, in the market-place, on the hilltops, and in the valleys. The custom of St. John bonfires, indicative of a people with unabashed and childlike faith, continues in some places to this day.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

All: Who made heaven and earth.

P: The Lord be with you.

All: May He also be with you.
Let us pray.

Lord God, almighty Father, the light that never fails and the source of all light, sanctify  this new fire, and grant that after the darkness of this life we may come unsullied to you who are light eternal; through Christ our Lord.

The fire is sprinkled with holy water; after which the clergy and the people sing the following hymn (for the music see the music supplement):

FSSP ORDAINS 12 TRADITIONAL PRIESTS FOR THE USA

Last week the Archbishop of Miami ordained 12 deacons to the traditional priesthood in Omaha Nebraska for the FSSP.  It is entirely possible one of these young men may be assigned here in the Atlanta Archdiocese at some point.

ONLY TRADITIONAL CORPUS CHRISTI OBSERVANCE IN ATLANTA ARCHDIOCESE

The only traditional external observance of Corpus Christi with procession in the the Archdiocese of Atlanta will be at St Francis de Sales in Mableton on Sunday June 7th 2026. There will be a Solemn High Latin Mass at 10:30 am followed by the outdoor procession that will stop at the three altars on the route for the Benedictions. Due to large crowds you must come early to find a seat. Confessions before mass. Plenary Indulgence available today.

Una Voce South Georgia is pleased to announce that there will be a high mass at Most Holy Trinity in Augusta at 12: 30 pm this Sunday for the Great Feast of Pentecost.  On this day you may gain a plenary indulgence by solemnly reciting or singing the Veni Creator Spiritus at this mass with the usual conditions. After mass please join the pot luck social in St Francis Hall and meet fellow traditional Catholics in the Augusta area.

FSSP ORDAINS DEACONS IN EUROPE & USA

Una Voce is pleased to announce that the FSSP (staffed at Saint Francis de Sales parish, Atlanta Archdiocese) as of Saturday, has just ordained and elevated 20 subdeacons, to the rank of deacon, 12 in Bavaria at the European seminary and 8 at the USA seminary. God willing, these men will be raised to the priesthood in 2027. It is entirely possible that at some point in the future one of these men will be assigned to the Atlanta Archdiocese after their priestly ordination.

Una Voce is pleased to announce there will be a high mass this Sunday for the 3rd Sunday after Easter.  Mass is at 12:30 pm at Holy Trinity downtown Augusta. 

After mass please join everyone in Saint Francis Hall for a covered dish dinner and possibly entertainment and meet fellow traditional Catholics in the Augusta area. 

The next Mass will be on Pentecost Sunday May 24th, plan now to make arrangements to attend.

THE ONLY TRADITIONAL HOLY WEEK IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA     UPDATED IMPORTANT

THE PARISH IS UNABLE TO CONTINUE HAVING ANY MASSES IN THE GYM. MOST MASSES/EVENTS HAD BEEN MOVED THERE DUE TO THE LARGE CROWDS ATTENDING THE PARISH. ALL MASSES WILL BE  MOVED BACK TO THE CHURCH-HOWEVER PLEASE NOTE THE CHURCH WILL FILL UP FAST SO COME EARLY TO BE ABLE TO GET A SEAT. OVERFLOW WILL BE SEATED IN THE PARISH HALL TO WATCH ON A LIVE FEED

The is the only Holy Week observance in Georgia, and will be at the FSSP parish in Mableton. 

ALL HOLY WEEK LITURGIES WILL BE SOLEMN

The Holy Week liturgy schedule is as follows at St Francis de Sales in Mableton. All liturgies will be in the Solemn Form (priest, deacon, sub deacon). This is the only parish in the Atlanta Diocese and in the state of Georgia where the traditional Holy Week will be observed. PLEASE NOTE DUE TO THE EXTREMELY LARGE CROWDS THAT ARE NOW ATTENDING MASS AT THIS PARISH MANY MASSES ARE NOW HELD IN THE GYM BEHIND THE CHURCH.  CONFESSIONS ARE STILL HEARD IN THE CHURCH 

PALM SUNDAY

10:30 am Solemn High Mass with blessing of palms and procession. To take a palm you kneel down in front of the priest then kiss the palm branch and then kiss the priest's hand, then take the palm. The eating of figs is traditional today as well as cleaning the house on Holy Monday, Tuesday and Spy Wednesday as is done during Advent and Shrovetide.

MAUNDY THURSDAY, TENEBRAE AND CONFESSIONS

Solemn High Mass of the Lords Supper 7:30 pm, with foot washing, stripping of the altar, translation and procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the altar of repose, Office of Compline is sung and then adoration at the altar of repose until midnight Confessions will be heard 9:30 pm to 10:30 pm.

ATLANTA ARCHDIOCESE LENTEN MISSION 2026

Father Duffy Diaconal Ordination

ONLY TRADITIONAL LENTEN MISSION IN GEORGIA

The FSSP will have a traditional Lenten Mission in the Atlanta Archdiocese beginning Tuesday March 17th with a sermon adoration and confessions, and continuing on Wednesday March 18th and concluding on Thursday March 19th. The mission begins each evening at 7:00 pm and will conclude at 9:00 pm, each night.  The preacher will be Father Joseph Duffy, FSSP visiting from his parish in Naples Florida. This is the ONLY traditional Catholic Lenten Mission in the state of Georgia.

TRADITIONAL CATHOLICS MEET SEXAGESIMA SUNDAY IN SAVANNAH

 

HIGH MASS AND POT LUCK THIS SUNDAY AT SACRED HEART FOR SEXAGESIMA

There will be the usual weekly high mass in Savannah this Sunday but this Sunday there is also the regular SECOND SUNDAY brunch after high mass. The brunch is a pot luck so bring something to share and meet fellow traditional Catholics in the Savannah Diocese.  If you can please bring plates cups, and cutlery. Also people will need to stay to clean up afterwards.

CANDLEMAS ATLANTA ARCHDIOCESE

ONLY CANDLEMAS IN GEORGIA (FEAST OF THE PURIFICATION)

The only place to assist at Candlemas in this Archdiocese is at Saint Francis de Sales in Mableton. There will be a high Candlemas at St Francis de Sales in Mableton on Monday February 2nd at 7:30 pm. The blessing of candles and outdoor procession precede the mass. Once the procession enters the sanctuary the priest will vest and the mass begins with the incensation of the altar omitting the payers at the the foot of the altar and the introit.  Bring your candles for the blessing and make sure your name is on them.  Place your candles outside the sanctuary at the altar rail opposite the altar of Saint Joseph. When you take a candle from the priest, you kneel then you kiss the candle first then kiss the priest's hand and take the candle. Your lighted candle is held during the procession, the Gospel, and the Cannon. At home these candles are lit for prayers after dusk on All Saints Day, Extreme Unction, and during storms. These candles will be used by the priests on the following day for the blessing of throats on St Blaze's Day. The creche is removed and it is traditional to eat crepes on this day. Also, beginning February 2, the Marian antiphon is Ave Regina Caelorum and is said until Wednesday of Holy Week, inclusive. Bees wax candles are for sale in the parish bookstore for $8.00 for two tapers.
