IMPORTANT MEETING IN AUGUSTA SATURDAY BE THERE

FROM THE LATIN MASS COMMUNITY IN AUGUSTA THERE IS A VERY IMPORTANT MEETING TOMORROW PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO ATTEND

Friends,

Today, Bp. Parkes issued new directives for the implementation of Traditionis Custodes in the Diocese of Savannah. If you have not read them yet, please do so here

As we expected, the results are a mixed bag for our community in Augusta. On the good side, we have been given permission to continue our once per month Latin Mass at Most Holy Trinity. Deo Gratias! While some of the implications for our community jump right off the document, others are more subtle and will take some time and collective effort to sort out.

To that end, we have arranged for a meeting that will be open to everyone in our traditional community to discuss this document and brainstorm ideas on how to chart a way forward given the new environment. No doubt, many of you have strong feelings about TC and the bishop's new directives. Bring these strong feelings with you and voice them to the community. The goal of this meeting, first and foremost, is to come together and open up the discussion as a community, so we hope many of you will join us. The more voices heard from, the better.

The meeting will take place THIS SATURDAY at 5pm in St. Francis Hall at Most Holy Trinity. Fr. Almeter may come over to the hall after he finishes with the 5pm Mass if you have questions for him specifically. If you have any questions beforehand or ideas for this meeting, please let us know.

SAVANNAH BISHOP ISSUES NEW DECREE ON LATIN MASS

November 4, 2021

Memorial of St. Charles Borromeo

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In his commentary on the Gospel of John, St. Augustine wrote…

O Sacramentum pietatis! O signum unitatis! O vinculum caritatis!
O sacrament of devotion! O sign of unity! O bond of charity!

(In Joannis Evangelium, 26, 13)

These words serve as a reminder of the incredible power of the Eucharist to draw us more deeply into a relationship with God, the Church and one another. At every celebration of the Eucharist, simple elements of bread and wine are consecrated to become the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, His Real Presence. The Eucharistic celebration of the Mass brings us together as God’s instruments of love, mercy and peace. Although Mass may be celebrated throughout the world in different languages and according to different rites, we are united in the Real Presence of Christ, who satisfies the hunger of our souls.

On July 16, 2021, Pope Francis issued the motu proprio, Traditionis custodes, with an accompanying ecclesiastical letter to address liturgical celebrations according to the norms of the Roman Missal of 1962. In the Diocese of Savannah, various churches have celebrated the Mass utilizing this Missal (also referred to as Mass in the Extraordinary Form or the Traditional Latin Mass) on a regular basis for over 15 years. After reviewing the motu proprio and seeking a better understanding of the spirit of the Holy Father’s words, it is evident that Pope Francis is allowing the local Ordinary (Bishop), as custodian of the celebration of liturgy and ritual celebrations, to determine the use of the Roman Missal of 1962 in his particular Diocese. Therefore, after prayer and discernment, I share with you the following directives for the celebration of the Mass in the Extraordinary Form in the Diocese of Savannah as of the First Sunday of Advent, November 28, 2021:

  • The public celebration of the Mass utilizing the Roman Missal of 1962 is to take place only with the designated frequency and in the following locations:
    — Weekly on Sunday at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Savannah. Mass on Christmas Day may also be celebrated.
    — Monthly on Sunday at Most Holy Trinity Church in Augusta, St. Joseph Church in Macon and St. Anthony of Padua Church in Ray City.

  • The faithful attending these Masses must be registered at their local parish (i.e., parish of record).
  • Rev. Allan McDonald is appointed as Bishop’s Delegate for Mass in the Extraordinary Form to ensure that the pastoral needs of those attending the Traditional Latin Mass in the Diocese of Savannah are properly attended to.

  • Permission from the Ordinary is necessary for the celebration of Baptisms, Marriages and Funerals in the Extraordinary Form and is to be initially addressed to the Bishop’s Delegate noted above.

  • Families with children who attend Mass in the Extraordinary Form in the above-referenced locations are to participate in Sacramental Preparation and Faith Formation at their parish of record.

  • ƒ Priests who have received proper training to celebrate the Mass according to the Roman Missal of 1962 must receive written permission from the Ordinary in order to celebrate these liturgies.

  • ƒ Those ordained after the issuance of Traditionis custodes must first request in writing permission from the Ordinary to pursue the necessary training to celebrate the liturgy using the Roman Missal of 1962. If local permission is granted, the Ordinary will subsequently petition the Apostolic See for approval.

Since my Episcopal Ordination and Installation as the Fifteenth Bishop of Savannah just over one year ago, I have attended the celebration of the Mass according to the Roman Missal of 1962 and appreciate the reverence exhibited at these celebrations. As your Bishop, it is my hope that all liturgies, regardless of the Missal used, are celebrated with the dignity and reverence that draw the faithful deeper into the mysteries of our faith. I am grateful to our Priests for the diligence and care with which they celebrate and pray the liturgical rituals of our Church.

Today our liturgical calendar honors St. Charles Borromeo, who dedicated his life to leadership, catechesis and formation. I pray that through his intercession, our Diocesan family will be united in our desire to know, love and serve God and one another through our full, active and conscious participation at the celebration of the Eucharist. May our efforts to grow together in devotion, unity and charity be a beautiful public witness of the Kingdom here on earth.

Be assured of my prayers for you, your loved ones and your intentions. I appreciate your prayers for me as your Shepherd. May we meet each day in our prayers and Rejoice in the Lord always!

In Christ,

Most Reverend Stephen D. Parkes
Bishop of Savannah

OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON IMPLEMENTATION OF TRADITIONIS CUSTODES IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF ATLANTA

OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON IMPLEMENTATION OF TRADITIONIS CUSTODES IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF ATLANTA (FROM THE GA BULLETIN)

ATLANTA—In a Sept. 8 memo to his priests, Archbishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv., outlined how the Archdiocese of Atlanta will implement Pope Francis’ Motu Proprio “Traditionis Custodes.” While St. Francis de Sales Church in Mableton will be able to continue to provide all sacraments using the pre-Vatican II 1962 Missal and St. Monica Church in Duluth will offer one Mass in the Extraordinary form each week, no other priest can publicly celebrate a Mass or offer a sacrament in this way. The memo goes into effect during the first week of October.

The Pope’s July Motu Proprio called on bishops around the world to limit the use of the pre-Vatican II Mass in their dioceses and put a stop to founding any new personal parishes. The pope cited a need for unity in making his decision. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith surveyed bishops around the world about the use of the so-called Tridentine Masses. “The responses reveal a situation that preoccupies and saddens me, and persuades me of the need to intervene,” wrote the pope.

In 2007, Pope Benedict granted permission for the Tridentine Masses to be celebrated. He felt the old and new liturgies could exist in the same parish without causing division. The survey seemed to indicate otherwise. Pope Francis felt too many Catholics were going to the Extraordinary Form Masses because they rejected the reforms of Vatican II.

“A final reason for my decision is this: ever more plain in the words and attitudes of many is the close connection between the choice of celebrations according to the liturgical books prior to Vatican Council II and the rejection of the Church and her institutions in the name of what is called the “true Church,” wrote the pope. “One is dealing here with comportment that contradicts communion and nurtures the divisive tendency—I belong to Paul; I belong instead to Apollo; I belong to Cephas; I belong to Christ’—against which the Apostle Paul so vigorously reacted,” he added.

St. Francis de Sales is not like other parishes in the archdiocese. The parish is served by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP), an order that offers the sacraments of the church using the pre-Vatican II Missal from 1962. “St. Francis de Sales is a personal parish. This is different from a territorial parish, which is meant to minister to the faithful in a defined geographical area of the diocese. One’s home parish is determined by where he lives. A personal parish on the other hand is meant to serve a particular group of faithful in the diocese and is not restricted to a certain area of the diocese. Personal parishes are often based on nationality and celebrate the sacraments in a particular language to meet the needs of an ethnic group,” explained Father Andrew Rapoport, FSSP, parochial vicar for St. Francis de Sales. “Our parish was established for those who are devoted to the Traditional Mass in Latin. Consequently, any Catholic living in the Archdiocese is able to join our parish,” he wrote in an email to The Georgia Bulletin.

Father Rapoport added that the parish welcomes visitors, but he recommends people watch a video or read a little about the pre-Vatican II Mass before they come so they know what to expect.

Liturgical reforms instituted after the Second Vatican Council dramatically changed how Catholics worshipped. Prior to the council, most sacraments, including Mass, were in Latin. The priest faced “ad orientem,” or to the east, with his back to the people. Prayers and responses were sung in Latin, usually by a choir since many lay people did not know the chant or polyphony used.

Vatican II called for people to actively participate in Mass. One way to accomplish this was to offer readings and prayers in the vernacular language of the local community. The priest turned to face the people, the altar pulled away from the wall and additional versions of the Eucharistic Prayer were added. The new missal included a third Scripture reading and included previously omitted selections from the Gospels. For many Catholics, the changes were radical and not welcomed. Others saw the reforms as a much-needed modernization of the church.

Archbishop encourages liturgical reverence

Father Charles Byrd, pastor at Mary Our Queen Church, converted to Catholicism after—as he describes it—stumbling into a church where Latin and chant were used every Sunday. He went on to study liturgy and tells his parish he loves to sing. He says there are many good things about the reformed liturgy, called the Novus Ordo. “The old Mass had two readings while the Novus Ordo has three. In the old rite, the readings were on a one-year cycle and mostly used Matthew and John. In the new form, Mark and Luke were added so it does open up Scripture to us,” he said.

One of the most dramatic changes, in his view, was in music. While readings and prayers were translated, the traditional hymns, set to polyphony and chant were left behind in favor of modern music. New efforts are underway to translate the hymns into English and reintroduce them to the Novus Ordo. Father Byrd believes adding back these hymns would help make the Novus Ordo more solemn and beautiful. “People are looking for reverence (in Mass),” he said.

In his memo, Archbishop Hartmayer urges the priests of the diocese to take extra care to make sure their liturgies are good ones, saying “Brothers, we must do everything in our power to ensure that our eucharistic liturgies are celebrated with utmost reverence and respect. Our eucharistic celebrations must be the best that we can provide and encourage congregational participation.” He encouraged them to invest in music and in their worship spaces and to take extra time and effort with their preaching. “I implore you to proclaim the Gospel message from your heart and take time to pray and reflect on what the Gospel is saying to you as you prepare to feed your people with the Word of God,” wrote the archbishop.

The blessing of herbs was reserved only to the feast of the Assumption. Herbs had not our restricted English meaning but included all kinds of cultivated and wild flowers, especially those which in some way had a symbolic relation to our Lady. The people brought herbs to church on her feast not only to secure for themselves another blessed object, but also to make of the occasion a harvest festival of thanksgiving to God for His great bounty manifested in the abundant fruits of the earth. The herbs were placed on the altar, and even beneath the altar-cloths, so that from this close contact with the Eucharist they might receive a special consecration, over and above the ordinary sacramental blessing of the Church.}
After the Asperges if it is a Sunday, otherwise immediately before Mass, the priest, standing before the altar and facing the people who hold the herbs and fruits in their hands, says in a clear voice:
P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
All: Who made heaven and earth.
Psalm 64
P: To you we owe our hymn of praise, O God, in Sion; to you must vows be fulfilled, you who hear prayers.
All: To you all flesh must come* because of wicked deeds.
P: We are overcome by our sins; * it is you who pardon them.
All: Happy the man you choose, * and bring to dwell in your courts.
P: May we be filled with the good things of your house, * the holy things of your temple.
All: With awe-inspiring deeds of justice you answer us, * O God our Savior,
P: The hope of all the ends of the earth * and of the distant seas.
All: You set the mountains in place by your power, * you who are girt with might;
P: You still the roaring of the seas, * the roaring of their waves and the tumult of the peoples.
All: And the dwellers at the earth's ends are in fear at your marvels; * the farthest east and west you make resound with joy.
P: You have visited the land and watered it; * greatly have you enriched it.
All: God's watercourses are filled; you have prepared the grain. * Thus have you prepared the land:
P: Drenching its furrows, * breaking up its clods,
All: Softening it with showers, * blessing its yield.
P: You have crowned the year with your bounty, * and your paths overflow with a rich harvest;
All: The untilled meadows overflow with it, * and rejoicing clothes the hills.
P: The fields are garmented with flocks and the valleys blanketed with grain. * They shout and sing for joy.
All: Glory be to the Father.
P: As it was in the beginning.
P: The Lord will be gracious.
All: And our land will bring forth its fruit.
P: You water the mountains from the clouds.
All: The earth is replenished from your rains.
P: Giving grass for cattle.
All: And plants for the benefit of man.
P: You bring wheat from the earth.
All: And wine to cheer man's heart.
P: Oil to make his face lustrous.
All: And bread to strengthen his heart.
P: He utters a command and heals their suffering.
All: And snatches them from distressing want.
P: Lord, heed my prayer.
All: And let my cry be heard by you.
P: The Lord be with you.
All: May He also be with you.
Let us pray.
Almighty everlasting God, who by your word alone brought into being the heavens, earth, sea, things seen and things unseen, and garnished the earth with plants and trees for the use of man and beast; who appointed each species to bring forth fruit in its kind, not only for the food of living creatures, but for the healing of sick bodies as well; with mind and word we urgently call on you in your great kindness to bless + these various herbs and fruits, thus increasing their natural powers with the newly given grace of your blessing. May they keep away disease and adversity from men and beasts who use them in your name; through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
Let us pray.
God, who through Moses, your servant, directed the children of Israel to carry their sheaves of new grain to the priests for a blessing, to pluck the finest fruits of the orchard, and to make merry before you, the Lord their God; hear our supplications, and shower blessings + in abundance upon us and upon these bundles of new grain, new herbs, and this assortment of produce which we gratefully present to you on this festival, blessing + them in your name. Grant that men, cattle, flocks, and beasts of burden find in them a remedy against sickness, pestilence, sores, injuries, spells, against the fangs of serpents or poisonous creatures. May these blessed objects be a protection against diabolical mockery, cunning, and deception wherever they are kept, carried, or otherwise used. Lastly, through the merits of the blessed Virgin Mary, whose Assumption we are celebrating, may we all, laden with the sheaves of good works, deserve to be taken up to heaven; through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
Let us pray.
God, who on this day raised up to highest heaven the rod of Jesse, the Mother of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, that by her prayers and patronage you might communicate to our mortal nature the fruit of her womb, your very Son; we humbly implore you to help us use these fruits of the soil for our temporal and everlasting welfare, aided by the power of your Son and the prayers of His glorious Mother; through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
And may the blessing of almighty God, Father, Son, + and Holy Spirit, come upon these creatures and remain always.
All: Amen.
They are sprinkled with holy water and incensed.

FSSP PRIEST ASSIGNMENTS AFFECT GEORGIA

NEW FSSP PRIEST ASSIGNED TO ARCHDIOCESE OF ATLANTA

The FSSP makes its yearly priest assignments each summer and this year it will affect the parish of Saint Francis de Sales in Mableton. First, thankfully, the pastor Father Robert Dow, FSSP will remain as pastor, however the assistant pastor Father James Smith FSSP as been assigned as the new chaplain of the FSSP apostolate in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. His replacement here will be Father Andrew Rapoport, FSSP. . These changes take place next week. Father Smith may be contacted at:

Mater Dei

110 State Street

Harrisburg PA  17101.

A short abridged bio of Father Rapoport  from his ordination announcement.

Father Rapoport is coming to us from the FSSP apostolate in  Post Falls Idaho. He was ordained in 2018 in Omaha Nebraska. He was born in San Jose California and grew up in San Luis Obispo. He studied Auto Technology in college. At school he became involved in the Newman Center. He then learned of the promise of Our Lady of Fatima and began saying a daily rosary, assisting at daily mass and spending time before the Blessed Sacrament.  He began to feel the distant call in his heart. In 2010 one day when he was kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament he felt a sudden urge to celebrate mass. Two weeks later a friend told him that he would make a good priest. About the same time he discovered the beauty of the traditional Latin Mass and after attending a sung Mass, he was struck by its beauty and he knew this was the mass that he wanted to celebrate. In 2011 Father entered the FSSP seminary in Denton Nebraska.

SAVANNAH BISHOP ISSUES LETTER

THE BISHOP OF SAVANNAH HAS ISSUED THE BELOW LETTER ON THE DIOCESE WEBPAGE

Feast of St. Mary Magdalene

Dear Friends in Christ,

On Friday, July 16, Pope Francis issued the motu proprio Traditionis Custodes, in which he established new guidelines for the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass (also known as the Extraordinary Form*) for the worldwide Church. I encourage you to read the document and the letter to the Bishops of the world that accompanied it in their entirety.

I was introduced to the Mass in the Extraordinary Form after my Ordination as your Bishop, and I found great reverence and mystery there. In every celebration of the Mass – regardless of the Missal being used – it is my prayer that we are all drawn into the gift and mystery of the Real Presence of Christ.

Please join me in asking for the care of the Blessed Mother and the wisdom of St. Joseph while I, as your shepherd, discern the spirit of what Pope Francis is asking of us and determine the proper implementation of these guidelines across our Diocese. Until these decisions are made, Priests in the parishes already scheduled to offer Mass in the Extraordinary Form have permission to do so.

On this feast of St. Mary Magdalene, I am reminded of her words at the tomb: “They have taken my Lord away, and I do not know where they have put him.” Her confusion and despair soon gave way to great joy…rejoicing in the presence of the resurrected Lord. We place our trust and confidence in the Holy Spirit guiding our Church and her leaders to peace and joy.

Please be assured of my daily prayers for you, your loved ones and your intentions. May we meet each day in our prayers and Rejoice in the Lord always!

Most Reverend Stephen D. Parkes
Bishop of Savannah
